When You Let The Kids Run The Party

alex_bd One of the older kids at my son’s 10th birthday party told my daughter that she should start a party planning business.  The party was that awesome.

The compliment wasn’t due to the theme of the party, there wasn’t any.

It wasn’t due to the unique refreshments, just chips and soda, or the presentation.  Kayla chucked the bottles and bags on the table, and let the partygoers help themselves.

I guess the young man really enjoyed the free-for-all nature of the festivities.

The highlight of the party was the shaving cream extravaganza, where each kid received a can of shaving cream and an invitation to go wild.  This was followed by a no-holds-barred water gun fight, and the traditional piñata frenzy.

Perhaps he liked the surprise guests.  I scooped up the dead bird before they could see it, but the kids found the dead vole first.  Apparently, poke-the-rat-with-a-stick is a popular party game.

I’m pretty sure they all liked the lack of parental supervision.  My husband didn’t make it back from his business trip, and my teen daughter wasn’t totally up for the challenge of keeping 20 rambunctious kids from trouble.

There wasn’t an adult looking on when they conceived the brilliant plan to to wind surveyor’s tape around a pair of kids, tightly wrapping the  head and feet, to better bind them when rolling down the hill.  Oh, the disappointment when a mom noticed and put a stop to that game.

It’s a wonder that we didn’t have more casualties, but I wish we’d had less.  One of our guests limped away with a sprained ankle after taking a tumble on the water-soaked hill.

I guess that we should just be grateful that the free-for-all didn’t generate more injuries.

The kids clearly weren’t concerned by the potential dangers, and may have actually enjoyed the party all the more because of them.  We saw lots of smiles all around.

I don’t think my daughter is ready to go into the party planning business, but she sure knows how to please the young crowd.
