Wildflowers For Mom

Brunch is one of my favorite meals, but a Mother’s Day Brunch is not how I want to be feted on this special day.

As I don my Spring apparel, the last thing I need is a big meal to draw attention to my Winter residue.  This time of year, I feel a pressing need, right around my waistline, to get moving outside.

That’s why I turned down a brunch invitation, and insisted on spending Mother’s Day hunting wildflowers in the woods.  I was still the lucky recipient of breakfast in bed, gifts, and a handmade card.  However, this treat was followed with a nature trail hike at Moreau Lake State Park.

mom4 It’s a beautiful park, mercifully empty of people since the lakeside beach has not yet opened for the season.  We practically had the park to ourselves, allowing us to let Yoohoo off-leash to run around and swim in the lake.

While Yoohoo chased sticks into the water, and the kids fenced with cattails, I wandered off to collect wildflowers on film.  At this time of year, wildflowers are easy to spot above last year’s debris of fallen leaves.

I easily identified the Wild Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis, but I can’t place this purple beauty.  If you recognize it, please tell me what it is.

Eventually, I had to take my own wildflowers home – a stinky, wet dog and kids covered in ticks and cattail fluff.  They weren’t as lovely as the Spring flowers, but I love them all the more.

Wishing you a beautiful Mother’s Day, filled with all kinds of wildflowers!

I could’ve used a Digital Field Guide (http://spedr.com/5lpyo.) Too bad the technology hasn’t caught up with the need yet.

Gorgeous flower photos. Since discovering macro photography, I have been obsessed with taking pictures of flowers everywhere I go. Hope you had a Happy Mother’s Day!
