So Many Places To See

by Sandra Foyt on May 8, 2009 in travel | 1 Comment

I thought I was a world traveler.  My first transatlantic flight was at the tender age of six months when my grandmother took me away from my parents in Washington, DC to introduce me to her mother, my great grandmother, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Since then, I’ve lived in the Caribbean, as well as Argentina.   At the end of 9th Grade, I traveled with two young teachers and a group of friends on a 5-European-countries-10-Days whirlwind.    I even traveled alone to Bogota, Colombia when I was in 10th Grade.

As an adult, travel continues to be something I just have to do.  I get a little crazy if I don’t.  So, imagine my dismay when I realized how little I’ve seen of the world when you plot it out on a chart.  There is so much to see before I die.

Zooming in on the US raises the relative percentage, but still, I have yet to see the whole big chunk in the middle of America.

I’m planning to explore America this summer.  My kids and I will be spending the summer driving around the country.  We haven’t decided where we’re stopping yet, although we’re planning to meet up with my husband for some climbing and fossil hunting in Wyoming.

I’d also like to add a bit of Storybook Travel by stopping at sites that are the setting for children’s books.

Where in America do you recommend that we stop?  I’m looking for great camping suggestions and off the beaten path stops where we can imagine a whole new way of life.

P.S. Thank you,  Thinking Mother, for showing me this chart.

Your post really inspired me. First of all, the maps are a great find! Thanks.

Also loved the idea of visiting places with ties to children’s books. I decided to write down a few suggestions, and before I knew it I had decided to try to find a children’s book set in every state. They may not all fit your family’s tastes, but there are also links to larger lists/resources. Just posted the list I made for you here – http://blog.wrappedinfoil.com/?p=229 Hope you and your family have a wonderful trip.
