Home School Quarterly Report, 3rd Grade I

by Sandra Foyt on November 20, 2008 in Digital Learning, Home School Resources | 6 Comments

Between writing novels, attending parent/teacher conferences, and packing for a week-long road trip, I hardly have time for anything. Of course, the more that you have on your plate, the more you’re asked to do.

One item on my list of assignments, and one that I can’t postpone, is sending in the first quarterly report of our second year of homeschooling. It’s a relatively easy project, complicated by just one thing.

We’re in the middle of several ongoing projects, that certainly cannot be described as completed. Hopefully, we won’t set off any alarms when those projects are listed again next quarter.

Name: Alex

Blog Website: http://alexhomegate.blogspot.com

Grade: 3rd

Hours of instruction this quarter: 247.5+

Math:

In Singapore Math 3A, Alex studied the following: Numbers to 10,000; Addition and Subtraction to the Thousands; Two –step Word Problems; Multiplication and Division (Ones, Tens, Hundreds & 6 Tables)

Language Arts:

Alex read several books, including: The Lightning Thief series, The 39 Clues, The Phantom Tollbooth, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and a wide variety of Greek myths and epics. He also completed several non-fiction reading assignments for Science and Social Studies. Alex has also enjoyed discussing some of these books in a homeschooled boys book club.

Alex has been developing writing skills through weekly blog posts, including book reviews, an ongoing Supernatural News project, and reading assignments within Read and Understand: Myths and Legends (Evan –Moor.) Currently, he is writing a novel as part of the NaNOWriMo challenge.

Additionally, Alex has practiced LA skills through work book exercises in: analogies, age-level grammar, spelling practice, dialogue, and description.

Social Studies:

Alex has undertaken a study of Ancient Greek daily life and myths with some attention to the five standards: social, political, geographic, economic, and historic.

Through Cub Scouts, Alex covered Patriotism and Citizenship in a Presidential Elections program. He also observed Primary and National elections first-hand.

Science:

Alex initiated several different science investigations: a biological classification lesson, observation of fern reproductive system, failed mealworm/earthworm habitat project (we are currently replacing worms), and caterpillar habitat.

Additionally, Alex read a variety of non-fiction material in science including: biographies of early Greek scientists, books on insects, and Odyssey Adventures in Science magazines on Microbiology and on GlassWorks. He also visited the Bronx Zoo and the American Museum of Natural History.

The Arts:

Currently on break from musical instrument lessons, Alex has not been participating in music lessons this quarter. We are actively looking for a guitar teacher at this time, while allowing him to explore personal music appreciation.

As for the visual arts, the art program that Alex had planned to attend was cancelled. Instead, he has pursued his own drawing and multimedia projects. He also visited the Metropolitan Museum where he completed an Arts of Ancient Greece Tour.

Health and Physical Education:

Alex is building decision-making and advocacy skills through Cub Scout activities including: Discovering Our Town’s Past, Volunteering at the Regional Food Pantry, Take Care of Your Planet, and Law Enforcement Is a Big Job.

Meanwhile, he’s been getting lots of exercise through: gymnastics, fencing, YMCA activities, walking the dog, and playing outside.

Spanish:

Practiced Spanish with I Can Read & Speak in Spanish: The Simple Method for Kids to Learn Spanish Immediately by Maurice Hazan.

Technology:

Alex continues to practice keyboarding skills, Internet research, and using the tables in Word. He is also learning how to use a digital camera.

Wow, you both certainly accomplished a lot this quarter. I am always so impressed by homeschooling parents.

That’s great- I hope my boys are learning that much at school every quarter!

I’m sure they are! Kids are so eager to learn. The challenge is stopping long enough to create a snapshot of what they’ve done!

Great job Alex.
