Twitter Power To Feed The Hungry

by Sandra Foyt on November 17, 2008

Proving that Twitter Moms are a creative bunch, a few have found a way to bring their concern for the hungry into our weekly GNO, Girls Night Out.

Tomorrow night we’ll be chatting about charity, service, and giving - all topics that are near and dear to my heart.  I’m especially interested to discover ways to use new technology to facilitate service.

GNO, an “online community for women that promotes socializing, strength, success, and service,” has teamed up with FeedingAmerica.org to help feed 14 Million people this Thanksgiving.

Last year, at this time, in a Hunger 101 Program, Girl Scouts discovered that the number of families depending on our local food pantry had doubled.  This year, the economic downturn promises to hit America’s working poor even harder than last year’s rising food and fuel prices.

How can you help feed the hungry?

  • Donate to Feeding America through GNO’s Paypal.
  • Promote this fundraiser through your favorite social media or on your blog.  Grab a button HERE just like the one above.
  • Participate in the LIVE AUCTION.
  • Join us on Twitter for the Girls Night Out Party, Tuesday, November 18, 9 PM Eastern, and let’s chat about ways to change our world.

How can you join the Twitter GNO Party?

  1. If you don’t have one already, sign up for a Twitter account.
  2. RSVP on Mommy Gossip - GNO.
  3. Make sure you’re following @Hashtags in Twitter.
  4. Go to Twitter Search, and type #GNO in the search box.  You’ll then see all the GNO tweets displayed in real time.  You can reply in that window, or
  5. Open multiple windows with Twitter, one for typing replies, and another showing your @Replies that you can refresh periodically.

Let’s see if networked parents can really make a difference to millions of hungry Americans this holiday season, and beyond.

Love what we can do on Twitter. Moms online are powerful and I’m sure many people will not be hungry this Thanksgiving because of it. Thanks for spreading the word!

I have never participated in GNO on Twitter, but it sounds a little confusing. I don’t know if I could keep up with everything.

This all sounds so amazing…I will definitely blog about it - have a meeting at 9, so sadly I have to miss GNO. Thanks for using your blog for good!

Hey Sandra and GNO Ladies,
I think it is super great to see that you are using your blog and Twitter power to raise money for families in need.
I know that here in the Las Vegas area the shelters and help programs have been running out of food.
So many of the people needing the food are families that work, some have lost jobs and homes. We also have a program here that sends a backpack of food home on Fridays with kids so they have food over the weekend. This is because we have so many kids that may only have regular meals due to school lunch and breakfast programs.
Everyone deserves to sit down to a full meal!
Keep up the good work ladies.

I’ll definitely have to check it out! It makes me all warm and tingly to see good people doing good things.
