Yoohoo Is Not A Water Dog

Pathetic.  How else to describe the only Labrador Retriever that doesn’t like to swim?  Dave begs and pleads to get Yoohoo in the water, but he won’t budge.  We’ve been tempted to just throw him in, but it’s hard to lift 100 pounds of solid muscle.  Yeah, muscle.  That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.

Honestly, I do NOT blame him!
We recently post an article on our blog about a dog that was attack by a shark while swimming.
I know that sharks are not usually in ponds and lakes but, that is just a chance that a smart dog may not want to take.
Now, Jack Russel’s, they are true water dogs! Love to swim! Baths are a totally different story!
LOL!

Hmm… Perhaps he is worried about lake monsters, or maybe he just wants his fish cooked, with tartar sauce.

Sandra,

Maybe the lake is just too big a jumping off point. Maybe he doesn’t like heights or jumping in.

My chocolate lab loves water, loves to drink from the hose, loves baths, loves to lay in puddles, and loves to swim, but he had to be taught to jump into a swimming pool. He prefers the beach where he can wade in at his leisure. He doesn’t like the big plunge thing at all.

I’d try a kiddy pool in the yard first and lots of other water contact, and when it’s warm enough, a human may have to go into the lake first and coax him in gently.

My sister actually had to teach one of her golden retrievers how to swim in the pool. The dog caught on very quickly, but she didn’t actually know how starting out.

My two cents. And I’ll go with the solid muscle thing too. Mine has dieted his way down to 85 lb of ahum, solid muscle.

No, I’d have to say Yoohoo is no lover of water, except, perhaps, in his water bowl. He doesn’t want to affect his eau du stink with any accidental contamination by water!

Yoohoo does know how to swim, but he simply chooses not to. Maybe he thinks he’s a cat.

Maybe just like there are people that don’t like water, there are animals that don’t either. I personally don’t like jumping in water where I cannot see or cannot easily reach bottom.

Eau du stink…I like that! I’ll have to keep it in mind whenever I’m writing about anything of a malodorous nature.

My 2 year old chocolate lab, Coco, hates water too…we tried her in the pool and beach when she was a puppy but hated it. She hates baths too, but if it’s raining she will sit out in the rain all day! I guess some labs just don’t like to swim…
