Do You Need Shock Value For a Killer Title?

by Sandra Foyt on August 29, 2008 in writing | 4 Comments

ProBlogger has just announced the winner of the Killer Titles Contest – and it wasn’t my submission, A Slacker Wife Celebrates Do Nothing Day.

The winner was the title with the maximum shock value: Sacrificing Goats and Eating Brains.

No worries.  That’s a good thing.

I’m thrilled to discover that there is something even more shocking than a wife finding time to relax, although I’d like to know if there is anything besides animal sacrifice that is considered equally unusual.

I also wondered if a woman’s perspective on Killer Titles might elicit a different selection.  Take a look at the contest submission list, and tell me what you think.  Which titles would you click on?

My Choice for Top 5 Killer Titles:

Discover Stunning Santiago!Soultravelers3 clued me onto this contest, and deserves special mention.  This site is always an intriguing portal into the life of a homeschooling family on an adventure around the world.

The Audacity of Blogging – Debbie at Bird On A Wire counsels bloggers to abandon caution, or give up blogging.

Shut Up and Kiss MeMy Home Sweet Home may even have you too swooning over her hubbie.

Pornography: The Sweat Shop Secret – I admit it.  I just had to click on this one to find out the story. A Room of Mama’s Own makes a compelling argument for checking our attitudes.

Passion For Hire – Really, this should be a book title, it’s that catchy.  Instead, it’s a blog post on Halo Secretarial Services.

I liked your submission, and top choice picks. Sometimes shock value goes a little too far… I am a bit scared to see what the winner’s post is about. Kinda makes me a bit queasy. :/

Thanks so much for including me in your list of titles to check out from the contest! Neither you or I won, but since the winner was chosen randomly that’s ok! I was impressed to see the actual post for the gory winning title was really nice! It was a fun contest to participate in wasn’t it?

Thanks so much for including me …wow, I honored to be number one! I am so glad that I inspired you to enter as I loved your title and submission.

It was the first time I tried anything like this and found it interesting. The title ” Passion for hire” got me too and I enjoyed the titles people came up with and meeting new people.

Love your blog!
