The second Quarterly Report is due, and I’m tempted to turn in the minimum that fulfills New York requirements.  In my first Quarterly Report I included a lot of unnecessary detail, including coverage of subjects that are not required in New York.  Now I’m trying to decide between: (1) the bare essentials Quarterly Report; (2) a sufficient Quarterly Report; or (2) too much information Quarterly Report.

As always, I went with the too much information option.  Here is our second Quarterly Report:

Language Arts:

Reading - O

A wide variety of fiction books that includes:

  • Poppy by Avi
  • The Spiderwick Chronicles by H. Black (Entire Series)

  • Read Aloud: Finished Book of Dragons by E. Nesbitt; Almost finished The Arabian Nights Entertainments.
  • Book Kids’ Club: Dirt Bike Racer by Matt Christopher

Alex loves to read, and enjoys a wide variety of books. We’re working on encouraging him to discuss elements of the books he reads.

Language Arts: Writing - V

  • 7 Blog Posts that include book reviews, poetry, and stories.
  • Email: Alex is becoming more confident in his use of email to write to family and friends.
  • Story Project: Alex has started drafting a story for the Reading Rainbow Contest.
  • Alex can now read cursive writing fairly well, but he cannot initiate cursive writing. He continues to practice daily. This quarter he has focused on mastering the grammatical elements of a sentence, and he is about to concentrate on practicing paragraph skills. He already has a strong understanding of paragraph formation.

Language Arts: Listening and Speaking - V

  • Follows Oral Directions - V
  • Listens Attentively - V
  • Listens and Responds to Others - V
  • Actively Participates – V
  • He is a very active participant in group lessons, but does not enjoy passive learning experiences.

Mathematics - V

Completed Singapore Mathematics 2A Unit 2 (Addition & Subtraction); Unit 3 (Length); Unit 4 (Weight); Unit 5 (Multiplication and Division.) He is currently working on Unit 6 (Multiplication Tables of 2 and 3.)

Alex understands math concepts quickly and easily; however, he doesn’t like to work through too many problems at a time. This is hindering his progress, but it ensures that he has a solid understanding before moving forward. I believe that he is on target to complete the planned material.

Science – O

  • Completed the Earth Science section in the Skill For Success Skill-Building Science Grades 1-2 workbook.
  • Other Projects: Snowflake Science; Gingerbread Science
  • Astronomy Cub Scout Belt Loop Program at the Schenectady Museum.
  • Electrifying Science program at CMOST.

Social Studies – V

  • Map Skills: Completed Scholastic Skills Book – Success with Maps and Calliope Magazine – Where in the World.
  • History: Ancient Egypt in The Story of the World.
  • Learned about Native Americans at a Cub Scout Den Meeting.

Health – O

  • Keep Your Body Health Cub Scout Wolf Achievement.
  • Know Your Home and Community Wolf Achievement.
  • Cooking and Eating Wolf Achievement.

Technology – O

  • Type To Learn 3 (Home Keys) Continued Progress.
  • Alex is becoming more comfortable navigating online. He is able to initiate, and send, emails. He is also learning how to use a camcorder.

Music – V

  • Weekly piano lessons with Lucy McCaffrey.
  • Introduction to early classical music.
  • Alex is making great progress in learning the notes while mastering several songs on the piano. He is about to move up to Level 1 in the Bastien series and he is preparing for a recital in February.

Visual Arts – G

  • Art program at The Albany Institute on History and Art. Explored the Hudson School collection and created clay tiles.
  • Many story illustrations and Pokemon related projects.
  • Made paper snowflakes, watercolor paintings, clay creatures, videos, and 3-D projects.

Spanish – V

Informal conversation; Spanish Greetings; Using You.

Physical Education – V

Hiking, Skiing, Ice Skating, Swimming, and Basketball were some of the ways Alex exercised this quarter.
