When you homeschool, you don’t ever have to stop the lessons. Our classroom is open 24/7, 365 days of the year. And yes, we do learn every single day. Who can avoid learning? It’s an ingrained, instinctive sort of thing.
This morning, Alex called my attention to a discovery about wind power. While waving a placemat, he found that the force of the wind moved the object on the table. Being scientifically inclined, he had to test this by increasing/decreasing the distance between placemat and object. Then, he explained his discovery in great detail.
I can just see a caveman version of Alex grunting out an explanation of fire.
Obviously, we don’t stop learning but I’ve been trying to decide what daily work, if any, should continue during the recess. I think that it’s important to feel that we have a break from the routine of work. After the recess, we can return reinvigorated and ready to tackle big projects.
Here is our short list of Holiday Recess Learning:
Music - Practice in disguise continues daily. The kids are currently mastering Christmas carols, and they enjoy performing these for any available audience. We just avoid calling it “practice.”
Reading - The kids can read as much as they want, and whatever they want. Kayla is stocking up on clique and ghost books, while Alex is devouring Pokemon stories and Calvin and Hobbes cartoons. I’ll be reading my stack of trashy romances.
Math- Kayla plans to continue daily Kumon practice, but Alex intends to do do absolutely no math work.
That’s it. Any other learning that we do over the Christmas break will be completely by chance. We’ll be back in 2008 ready to learn, grow, explore, and change the world. Happy Holidays!
