When I decided to homeschool, I surfed the web to find out how real-life families were teaching their children.

I found many, many families sharing their homeschool exploits in blogs but I was drawn to one in particular - Kelly Curtis’ Pass The Torch.

By the time I found the blog, Pass The Torch’s homeschool experiment was nearly at an end. Nevertheless, author Kelly Curtis’ monthly reviews and final summaries give an excellent overview of one family’s homeschool experience. Scared as I was to take on the unknown, it was encouraging to discover that it’s possible to leap into homeschooling without a plan or extensive preparation.

I especially enjoyed finding a homeschool educator who wasn’t biased against public schools and whose choice wasn’t influenced by religion (as far as I can tell from reading the blog.) And I love the message of the blog - empowering youth and passing the torch!

Reading Pass The Torch, I was inspired to start my own blog. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot as a parent, educator, and volunteer. Most of what I’ve learned, I’ve quickly forgotten.

A blog is a wonderfully easy way to share my ideas, information, and resources with others who also want to learn, grow, travel, and change the world. On Blogger, it can be as simple as: 1. creating an account; 2. naming the blog; 3. picking a template.

So, here I go, passing the torch.

If you would like to help pass the torch, visit Pass the Torch Tuesday “to celebrate the ways … you see kids/young people doing things RIGHT, as well as the ways in which adults pass them the torch. These are the little things we witness everyday.”
