What can you make with a couple of garbage bags and colored duct tape?

A simple shift or a prom dress; a poncho or a sun hat; pants or skirts; wedding dress or nun’s habit - Girl Scouts can make anything they want!

Junior Mixer

On November 28, 2007 Girl Scouts from various troops in our district were invited to a Garbage Bag Fashion Show Junior Mixer.

This was the second Junior Mixer (Juniors are Girl Scouts in Grades 4-6) that originated as a way to let Girl Scouts from all five district elementary schools meet before they transition into the one large middle school for Grades 6-8.

Each Girl Can Change the World! Junior Mixer

Last year, the theme of the Junior Mixer was “Each Girl Can Change the World!” so the activities were geared to helping the girls discover ways to make the world a better place. After an ice-breaker bingo game and pizza dinner, the girls rotated through activity centers on: Friends & Bullies; Podcasting, Blogging & Cybersafety; and Empowered Girls (Goal Setting & Earning the Bronze Award.) A highlight of this event was the banner that the girls created with suggestions for how girls can change the world. That night, the girls also collected DVDs and computer games for the Ronald McDonald House.

Garbage Bag Fashion Show Junior Mixer

This year, the theme of the Junior Mixer was “Garbage Bag Fashion” so the girls got to unleash their creativity and inner divas.

Upon admittance, the girls were given numbered tags that allowed the coordinators to sort them out by even and odd pairs. This was a brilliant way to force them to make new friends.

The pairs of girls then took turns making fashions out of garbage bags, duct tape, and imagination. Then, while one walked the runway (a colorful strip that proclaimed “Project Runway,”) the other described the ensemble over the microphone. Meanwhile, volunteers waved small flashlights, while others flashed cameras so that the models got the full paparazzi effect.

In keeping with the fashion theme, the girls collected gently used clothing to donate to the Salvation Army.

As always, creative Girl Scouts find ways to have fun while trying something new and making the world a better place!
