An Unschooling Tangent

It’s time for a vacation! No, not really. We’ve only been homeschooling for one month and we’re still working out the kinks. However, my baby sister is getting married, and she’s doing it in southern CA. It’s time for a family reunion.

I think we’ll be trying an “unschooling” tangent this week. There is no way that we can maintain our regular schedule while hanging out with cousins, shopping for wedding attire, meeting distant relatives, and just an overabundance of mayhem.

Even today was a bust as far as regular lessons go. Still, I wouldn’t say that it was a total loss.

Morning – Alex read Gregor #3 & a poetry book he noticed on a pile by the easy chair.

Afternoon – Lucy spent 3/4 of his piano lesson on a teachable moment. She pulled out an enormous atlas and helped him map out our cross-country trip. Alex memorized the continents & later we discussed Arctic (Polar Bears, Santa) vs. Antarctica (Penguins). Afterwards, he had 2 hours of computer time with his buddy, Catherine. I’m sure they’re learning vital consumer skills as they shop on Webkins!

Evening- Alex was forced to be an honorary Girl Scout at a Be a PAL (Protect A Life) Food Allergy Awareness Patch Program. This combined lessons in science (biology), health (wellness), and math (percentages). Someday, it may even inspire him to save a life.

All in all, not bad for a day “off” from regular lessons.
