Complimentary Learning

by Sandra Foyt on September 15, 2007

It doesn’t take much to drive home a lesson. At home, we reviewed the new vocabulary word “complimentary”, meaning free of charge. I wasn’t sure if Alex really understood the word, but he sure got it when he found out he could take the “Complimentary” magazine at the hair salon.

Home school learning is full of these serendipitous reinforcements. In math, we’re exploring patterns and discovering that you can observe patterns in every discipline. There are patterns in the constellations, in music, in spelling, in art. We just learned that there is a pattern called The Golden Ratio that Leonardo Da Vinci used in his drawing of The Vetruvian Man which combined art and science as it depicted the perfect symmetry of the human body.

I’m finding a pattern in that the more I seek to teach my son, the more I’m learning to appreciate the world around me. This must be the “complimentary” lesson of homeschooling.
