Letter of Intent to Homeschool in New York

I almost made my first huge mistake in this homeschool career. Somehow, I thought that I didn’t need to send in the Letter of Intent to Homeschool until two weeks before starting to home school.

I was wrong! In New York, homeschoolers are required to submit an annual Letter of Intent by July 1st. Yikes! No more procrastination.

Well, a little procrastination. I needed to research what people usually include in the first Letter of Intent to Homeschool.

First, I found a copy of the New York Education Code for Homeschooling on the A to Z Home’s Cool Homeschooling website (http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/laws/blNY.htm,) but this didn’t tell me what to write.

On the same website, I found a link to a sample Letter of Intent to Homeschool (http://www.christianhomeschoolers.com/hs_letter.html) but this is for homeschoolers in Hawaii. Tempting as it is to move to Hawaii, I need a Letter of Intent to Homeschool in New York.

I found a Sample Letter of Intent to Homeschool in New York at http://homeschoolinginnewyorkcity.blogspot.com/2005/08/sample-letter-of-intent.html. All I had to do was to fill in the address of my school district superintendent (found on our district website) and our personal information.

This is so easy. I am fortunate that other home school parents have done the research and that they put this kind of information online.

So, here we go . . . “We intend to homeschool our son.”
